Discovering the True Role of an Agile Coach

Agile Coach

An Agile Coach is a Scrum Master who not only helps teams implement agile practices but also guides them towards achieving high performance with intention and enthusiasm. They elevate the team’s journey from basic agile adoption to a focused and enjoyable pursuit of excellence.

Understands Agile Practices

Like a Scrum Master, an Agile Coach possesses a deep understanding of Agile practices and principles, guiding teams to embrace and effectively implement them.

Navigates Organizational Challenges

An Agile Coach is a professional who navigates not only their teams' but also organizational challenges and impediments.

Assists Management & Stakeholders

An Agile Coach develops into a coach for managers and stakeholders, helping them recognize and embrace the benefits of adopting Agile practices.

Focuses on Growth

An Agile Coach drives organizational growth by continuously enhancing how teams and stakeholders understand, articulate, negotiate, and deliver value.

Role of an Agile Coach

  • Coaches the teams for collaboration
  • Invests in teams' performance
  • Encourages the teams to find their own solutions
  • Coaches the teams to find their next step on their path
  • Helps the organization to achieve remarkable results
  • Guides individuals on their agile journey
  • Fosters team development and health
  • Speaks less and listens more

Coaching Levels: Unleash your Potential!

An Agile Coach has the capability to coach in three levels:

  1. The individual level
  2. The team level
  3. The organization level

An agile coach alternates their coaching focus between the team and individual members throughout the sprint, and focuses on organizational level at all times.

Main Ingredient: Listen

To master the role of an Agile Coach, it’s crucial to refrain from speaking first during team conversations and discussions. In team gatherings, allow the team to discuss and address situations first. If a question arises, whether from you or a team member,

  • remain silent
  • maintain eye contact
  • stay engaged, and
  • gently invite each person to contribute.

Eventually, someone will step in and speak.

Strengthen Collaboration

A team’s ability to collaborate enables them to navigate the complexities and joys of working together. To strengthen this ability, they need regular practice. Initially, guide them to begin with team-level cooperation, and then progress to these collaborative behaviors:

  • Identify and address the topics people are hesitant to discuss.
  • Ensure every team member’s voice is heard to foster synergy.
  • Ensure quieter members are heard and dominant voices are balanced
  • Guide the team to let go of personal agendas and follow the group’s lead to new, promising directions.
  • Help the team reconnect and generate ideas when they hit a roadblock.
  • Encourage serious engagement in games to enhance team collaboration.

Continuous Growth

We all talk about continuous growth is essential not only for the agile teams to become high performing but also for the organization to delıver better value to the stakeholders. By regularly gathering feedback—often through targeted surveys—Agile Coaches gain valuable insights about the Agile practices within the teams and the organisation, to identify areas for adjustment, enhancement and continuous growth.

This feedback not only strengthens agile methodologies within the team and the organisation but also fosters a culture of transparency and continuous improvement, ensuring sustained growth and adaptability. When Agile Coaches actively incorporate this feedback, they build trust and demonstrate a commitment to helping the teams and the organisation evolve, making the agile journey a truly collaborative effort.

Team Self Assessment

Conducting a team self-assessment survey is crucial as it empowers the team to reflect on their own practices, identify improvement areas, and take ownership of their agile journey.

Stakeholder Assessment

A stakeholder assessment survey is vital for gaining external insights into the agile team’s performance, helping the team understand stakeholder expectations and perceptions.

Agile Coach Assessment

An Agile Coach assessment survey allows the team to provide feedback on their agile coach, offering valuable insights that help the agile coach refine their approach.
